Putting a smile on every kids face for almost 4 decades is Doraemon. Forget about Hello Kitty, here you have a cat, a robotic cat that opened children’s mind, exercised imagination and all the while made dreams come true. What better way to celebrate Christmas than with the blue coloured, bubble headed robotic cat, Doraemon. What make Doraemon so successful is that it symbolises adventures from childhood which everyone has, its heart warming smile and mysterious pocket that’s filled with unbelievable, yet dream-like gadgets. He truly makes every child feel like they are on top of the world!
39 years on since the discovery of what ‘dreams are made of’ was answered by our robotic feline, the world still can’t get enough of Doraemon, its popularity still rising, its legend still vivid, its fans still growing in numbers. Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of Doraemon first released his most prominent work on December of 1969 and it was an instant hit, selling 80 million copies of its 50 volume manga set by 1992. Its anime series was launched on 1979 and the 1049 episodes are watched by million to date.
The story behind Doraemon is as follows: "Doraemon was sent back in time from the 22nd Century by Nobita Nobi’s great-great grandson Sewashi to improve Nobita's circumstances in order for Nobita's descendants to enjoy a better future. Due to Nobita’s laziness and failures in school, he left his family line beset with financial problems. " Although plot of Doraemon was nothing special, yet it was its ability to captivate and connect to every child’s dreams and aspirations that led it to fame.
The main characters in Doraemon is as simple as its story, as Fujiko’s friend say, Fujiko created every main character from what he noticed in his own school days.
Nobita Nobi: Nobita is a fourth grader in Tokyo and an only child. He wears glasses, a red or yellow polo shirt with a white collar, and blue shorts. Nobita is lazy, plain-looking, unlucky, and bad at sports, but it is these flaws that keep the story going. Nobita does possess some unique talents such as his unmatched marksmanship and string figure weaving. Although Nobita is normally portrayed as being cowardly, he has a strong sense of justice and will sometimes risk his life to help save entire civilizations, which is shown in full-length movies. The movies itself usually tackle global issues such as pollution and deforestation.
