See Cats in Lisbon with ARTEH

Major success brings Jullicle’s 29 Cats back to Portugal for an encore performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

Lisbon 30 September, 2006 – The world’s most famous musical, Cats, will be back in Lisbon at the Recreios Coliseum. The Portuguese population has anxiously awaited this return, for two years, as the 6 week performance flew by and many missed the opportunity to catch the show.

After being present in over 20 countries, performing live in more than 250 cities, and attracting 115 thousand spectators two years ago in Lisbon, Porto received this Box Office hit for the very first time.

Since Cats’s debut in London, 1981, the show has practically toured the world, having been translated in 10 different languages, winning 7 Tony Awards and one Grammy, amongst others. Reasons of success are explained by the excellent cast, where each interpretation has a personal touch, the unforgettable music that accompanies the story, Memory for example, and the appealing theme.

Based on the Old Possumดs Book of Practical Cats by TS Eliot, the musical tells the story of Grizabella the cat who finely returns to her family after abandoning them to discover other “worlds”.

The story is centered within a group of cats that get together “on a very special night” to discuss which one of them may get a new life in the mystical land of Heavyside Layer.

Hotel Aviz

Experience modern Lisbon with refinement of the past.

Well in the centre of Lisbon, the new Hotel Aviz maintains the spirit of the Picoas Palace that had once been its home and symbolised the romantic 1940s Lisbon. Kings, movie actors, spies and the cream of society at the time all came through this hotel due to its reputation of having the most luxurious service and the best kitchen.

Currently the hotel exhibits a modern and attractive architectural style whilst retaining the charm of a classical and timeless decor. From the memory of the past, besides amassing a vast number of items from the estate of the old Aviz, its atmosphere, class and tradition of good hospitality were also recovered.

Some of the refined suites bear the names and details of the celebrities that made the hotel renowned like Calouste Gulbenkian, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Eva P้ron, amongst others.

Bairro Alto Hotel

A reference to luxury in the historical and cultural centre of Lisbon.

With its eyes set on Luํs de Cam๕es Square and very close to the Sใo Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon the luxurious and cosmopolitan Bairro Alto Hotel is implanted into the former Grand Hotel de l’ Europe, where most of the renowned European artists once stayed during the 19th and 20th century.

In the cosy and sophisticated rooms and suites, as in all the hotel spaces, contemporary touches were combined with details from the thirties and fifties. The wood floors, the walnut furniture, the woollen rugs and the varied linen and silk fabrics are all of special note and are accompanied by frescoes on the walls.

Hotel Lisboa Plaza

Experience the atmosphere, the character and the tradition of a hotel dedicated to wellbeing.

Located next to the cosmopolitan Avenida da Liberdade, its eyes set on the Botanical Gardens, is the classical Hotel Lisboa Plaza, an icon of hospitality and heritage in the city of Lisbon.

The fa็ade is austere with an international style. The enveloping spaces are full of charm and comfort thanks to the classical design conceived by Gra็a Viterbo and the attention given to all the details. The hotel maintains its character, harmoniously combining the tradition of its history with the demands of modern times in a spirit of great versatility.

Palแcio Belmonte

Enjoy reading a book while occasionally watching the city of Lisbon from its roof tops.

Lisbon’s most ancient palace, the “Palแcio Belmonte”, is set in the historical city centre on the hill of the Sใo Jorge Castle.

The suites were decorated with an individual and modern style. Each room was named after a culturally renowned Portuguese personality and antique furniture was brought into harmony with contemporary works of art.

Pestana Palace

Make yourself at home in an atmosphere of luxury, refinement and history.

Located in one of the most tranquil areas of Lisbon the Pestana Palace Hotel was born from the restoration and refurbishment of the former Marqu๊s de Valle Fl๔r Palace dated from the 19th century and classified as a national monument.

In the impressive inner spaces the rooms and halls are ideal for parties, banquets or other prestigious events. The rooms and suites, located in a new wing, are of the utmost comfort and fully equipped. In the palace there are the luxury suites with a refined epochal decor.

Hotel Britania

Relive the refinement of the past and make your own history.

The Hotel Britania can be found in a 1940’s building designed by Cassiano Branco, renowned contemporary architect. The set of many stories, of heated conversations between the intellectuals and artists of the time, and of war time conspiracies featuring diplomats and spies, this hotel is worthy of your stay.

Considered one of the most luxurious hotels in Lisbon, its design perfectly harmonises the Art Deco style with nationalist icons. This inheritance has been preserved and the recent restoration of the building and its antique furniture, have enabled it to become listed as a building of historical interest.

Five Things To Remember When Introducing Your New Dog to Your Cat

by nmindell
Are you planning to bring a new dog into your cat’s home? Be sure to keep these five things in mind to make the introduction less stressful for everyone involved.

1. Give your cat her own space
Whether your cat has spent six months or six years in your home, she has come to identify it as her home. Bringing a dog into her space can be quite upsetting. Help reduce the stress for her by maintaining an area that is clearly her own. Give your cat a place to escape to free from canine intrusions. Eventually, once the dog and cat have gotten to know each other (on their own terms), this won’t be necessary. In the beginning, however, it is important that your cat have a place where she can feel at ease and relaxed for her long naps and cleaning sessions!

2. Place the cat food and water in a place your dog can’t reach
What might take your cat the better part of the day to eat can take just seconds for your dog to devour. Make sure the cat’s food and water is in a spot that is easily reached by your cat but not accessible to your dog. This will not only keep the food from being eaten by the dog but will give your cat a safe place to eat, somewhere where she doesn’t have to be on alert while eating. If she doesn’t feel safe, she may not eat. You will probably find over time that your cat will start to drink out of your dog’s water bowl; perhaps this is her way of reminding your dog who is boss!

3. Keep your cat’s nails clipped
If your dog comes too close to your cat she will let him know by doing a kitty growl or hissing and accompanying that with a swipe at his face with her paw. If her nails are sharp that could result in her cutting his face or scratching an eye. This will certainly teach him not to mess with her, but it could be quite painful and even cause some real damage that could require a visit to the vet. It’s inevitable that your cat will swipe at your dog to assert her household dominance, so reduce the likelihood of a cut and keep those nails trimmed.

4. Keep the kitty litter out of your dog’s reach
Dogs love kitty litter, especially used kitty litter! Some refer to the treasures the dog finds in the kitty litter as “Kitty Roca”. If you use a clumping kitty litter and your dog ingests too much of it, it could lead to a gastrointestinal blockage. Save yourself the hassle of discovering that your dog loves “Kitty Roca” and make sure the kitty litter is easy to get to for your cat but out of reach from your dog.

5. Be patient
It’s unlikely that your dog and cat will become friends overnight. However, over time you should see their behavior towards each other change for the better provided you do not force it. Some cats take longer to adjust than others. Your cat will probably develop a fairly intense fascination with your dog, always wanting to know where he is and what he is doing. This is partly due to fear and wanting to make sure the dog isn’t coming near her and partly due to curiosity. Soon their interactions will become more amicable as the dog learns he can’t mess with the cat and the cat sees that the dog isn’t trying to hurt her (provided that he isn’t!). Be patient and in time you may even see them snuggling on the dog bed!

Winter Tips For Cats

Cats may have a fur coat but, keep in mind just like us they are affected by the Winter cold. Here are some tips on keeping your cat safe and happy during the cold days and nights of winter.

Many people use fireplaces and small heating units during the winter. Keep in mind there can be very dangerous to your cat and can cause a serious burn. Make sure you have a screen in front of your fireplace and block off access to space heaters.

Some hairless breeds might actually need a coat to be kept warm. For instance, the Sphynx breed might benefit from a coat.

Make sure to have a nice place for your cat to snuggle and sleep. There are many beds available for this type of application.

Pay close attention to cars, if your cat happens to be outside they may seek the warmth of the engine. Be sure to check before starting your car.

If you use central heat keep in mind that it may be warm and toasty inside to you but, it might be to hot for your cat. Try to keep one room in your house cooler that the others, so your cat has somewhere to cool of. Keep an eye on your cat, if it starts to pant it might be to warm. This would be a sign to get your cat into a cooler room.

If it snows and your cat goes outside be aware that rock salt might hurt your cat ‘s paws. If you need to use ice melt around your house use the pet friendly kind. A heavy accumulation of snow may require you to shovel paths for your pet.

If your cat becomes wet from snow or rain, make sure to dry him or her.

Pay close attention to your cat’s diet in the winter, as they are less active and may tend to gain weight.

Also even in the winter pets can become dehydrated. Be sure to keep plenty of water available.

Do not leave your pet alone in the car. Automobiles do not stay warm inside for very long. Even a short trip inside a store your car can become very cold.

Be sure to keep hot beverages out of reach. A curious cat can get a severe burn from a cup of coffee, hot tea, etc.

With these tips in mind you can help keep your cat happy and safe during the winter months.

Cat Breeds for Cat Lovers

How to handle and enjoy the cats in your life...

Some cat breeds are low maintenance, while others require frequent brushing. Cat breeds are not as different from each other as different dog breeds but there are still some mighty different types of cats out there. Some cat breeds are people-pets and there are other breeds that prefer to be aloof and independent. Some cat breeds are more prone to spells of silence, but sometimes individual cats of the more vocal breeds are also not very talkative.

Cats Are Unique

Cats have amazing abilities to hear, see and smell. Cats will also turn their ears back when they are playing or to listen to a sound coming from behind them. Felines will also use contact to communicate urgency, from gentle reminders of feeding time to a demanding insistent rub. Cats involved in a conflict may extend their fully bristled tail straight into the air and turn their body sideways to appear larger.

Traits of the Cat Breeds

Some cat breeds require a great deal of brushing and maintenance to keep them happy and healthy and others only shed twice a year. Breeds are more often differentiated by their bodies and faces, and sometimes distinctive physical characteristics such as tailless or folded ears. Remember that no kitten is alike but, much like purebred dogs, different breeds of cats tend to have their own unique traits that may or may not affect your decision. Some cat breeds tend to be better with children or other pets, while other breeds of cat are commonly more aloof and prefer a more solitary existence.

What to Expect In Domestic Cats

Domesticated felines eat fairly little vegetable matter. Domestic cats are usually white, black, yellow, or grey and sometimes have markings of a different color. Domestic mixed-breed cats are generally characterized by long, thin tails, straight ears, and short hair of a variety of colorations. While most domestic felines are not purebreds (only 3% belong to a certain cat breed), there is a wide variety of breeds and most house cats reflect the traits of one or more of the different cat breeds.

Feline Behavior

Knowing what normal cat behaviour is will help in training felines and treating problem cat behaviour. Play-motivated aggressive behaviours are commonly observed in young, active felines less than two years of age. Play incorporates a variety of behaviours, such as exploratory, investigative and predatory, and provides young cats with opportunities to practice skills they would normally need for survival. Treats can help during playtime, but try to limit their use as positive rewards for behaviour modification.

Felines are highly social; a primary difference in social behaviour between cats and dogs (to which they are often compared) is that felines do not have a social survival strategy, or a "pack mentality", however this only means that cats take care of their basic needs on their own. With proper training and reinforcement of social behaviour, poorly socialized cats can become more social over time. Hunting has likewise become central to their behavior patterns, even to their predilection for short bursts of intense exercise punctuating long periods of rest. Scratching behaviour seems enjoyable to the cat, and even declawed cats will go through elaborate scratching routines with every evidence of great satisfaction, despite the total lack of results.

Conclusion

Some of the most popular cat breeds are Persians, Himalayans, Ragdolls, Siamese and Maine Coon. The more aloof cat breeds are: Norwegian Forest, Russian Shorthair and Nebelung. Although it is true that most cat breeds are known to have certain traits, felines are very much individuals and a cat of a breed noted for its independence could be in fact very dependent. With a little research, however, you are sure to determine which cat breeds are suited to your own situation.

How To Keep Your Cat Healthy - Your Guide to Cat Diseases and Conditions

by randall
Even with the best care, cats can become ill. Sometimes this means a simple "kitty cold," at other times the disease might have a more lasting or even fatal result. The following are some of the more common causes of serious illness in cats.

An upper respiratory infection (URI) is the medical term for what many cat lovers call a "kitty cold." Indeed, the symptoms match those of a human cold, sneezing and discharge from the nose. While they seem similar, the human and cat version of this infection are different, and one species cannot be infected by the other. However, URI is highly contagious among cats. If you have a multi-cat household and notice URI symptoms, isolate the cat immediately.

The best treatment for URI is time and loving care. Use a warm, moist cloth to keep your cat's eyes and nose free of discharge. You might need to warm her food to enhance the smell to encourage your cat to eat.

URI symptoms, which include a decreased appetite, can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Watch your cat carefully; not eating or drinking can lead to dehydration. Also, if your cat becomes extremely lethargic, it may mean the URI has turned into something more serious.

The symptoms of URI may last a few days to several weeks. Cats with URI may also be lethargic and have a decreased appetite. Monitor the cat carefully; a growing lack of appetite and fever can lead to dehydration. Not eating can lead to liver problems. Lethargy can mean a minor URI has become a more serious problem, such as pneumonia. If you notice this occurring, or if the discharge becomes very thick and yellowish-green, contact your veterinarian. Severe URIs may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Chlamydia is a type of bacteria that has many variations. Usually, each variant is species specific; feline Chlamydia is not transmitted to humans. In cats, the bacteria usually infects the eye, causing conjunctivitis. Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics.

Symptoms of Feline Chlamydia

* Anorexia (loss of appetite; may occur as the disease progresses)
* Coughing
* Difficulty breathing
* Fever (may occur as the disease progresses)
* Pneumonia (in young kittens 2 to 4 weeks old, which could be fatal)
* Runny nose (rhinitis)
* Sneezing
* Watery eyes due to conjunctivitis (either one or both eyes)

Panleukopenia is a condition in which a cat's white blood cell count drops dramatically. Since white blood cells are vital to the cat's defense against disease, this condition leaves cats vulnerable to deadly infections. The virus is transmitted via body secretions. Feces are particularly common transmitters. It can be carried in water or on shoes.

Panleukopenia is often referred to as a number of different terms, such as

* Panleukopenia (often shortened to "Panleuk" in verbal discussion)
* FPV (Feline Panleukopenia Virus OR Feline Parvo Virus)
* FP (Feline Panleukopenia)
* Feline Distemper
* Feline Infectious Enteritis
* Feline Infectious Gastroenteritis
* Feline Agranulocytosis
* Cat Plague
* Cat fever
* Show fever
* Psuedomembranous Enteritis
* Maladie du jeune chat
* Feline Typhus
* Feline Tyfoid
* Colibacillosis
* Agranulocytosis

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) causes a variety of diseases, one of which is leukemia, or cancer of the white blood cells. Infected cats often appear healthy in the early stages of the disease. The illness may take months or years to cause death. For a long time, FeLV was the most fatal disease among cats. Today, although vaccinations are available to protect cats from this disease, it continues to be a leading cause of death, as there is no treatment.

FeLV is usually transmitted through cat fighting with each other. Because large quantities of the FeLV are shed in puncture wounds and cat saliva associated with fighting result in the injection of PeLV into other cats. Other less frequent routes of viral spread include sharing food and water bowls, cats grooming each other, and transmission from mother to kittens before birth.
