The Temperament Of Cats

by: Grace Palce
Perhaps you imagined yourself as a sleek young woman like Selena Kyle. But is a cat the right pet for you? To decide, you must have an idea what to expect from a cat. You must be familiar about the temperament of cats.

First of all, a domestic cat is a highly intelligent and fiercely independent creature. It can never be placed on a leash the way dogs are. Cats do things they want to do and when they want to do it. They will demand the things they want, such as food and play. And they will also make it clear when they want to be left alone. Thus, the owner of a cat cannot expect his pet to do “work” for him.

Different breeds of cats have different personalities. Some cats are quiet while others like to meow all the time. Can you tolerate a cat who meows almost every hour? Some cats are fussy and choosy about the food you give them while others will eat just about anything. Can you afford the kind of food that your cat prefers? Some cats don’t mind being surrounded and petted by strange people while others will wield their claws if they face a person they haven’t met before. Does your house accept many strangers or are you alone most of the time? And some cats love to climb and curl on the lap of their masters. But others prefer to be left alone, watching TV or listening to the radio. Are you a cat owner who likes to cuddle all the time?

You will know when your cat is trying to get your attention. It will endlessly meow at you or it will follow you around or it will rub its body against your leg. You will also know if your cat is comfortable or scared by lifting up your cat. If the body is loose, then your cat is relaxed. If the body is tight, then something is scaring the daylights out of it.

Cats like to sleep. And the specific personality and breed of the cat will determine where the cat chooses to sleep. Some like to be in secluded places where no one can disturb them. They like to lie in high cupboards and similar places. Other breeds of cats like to sleep in places where everyone is converging. These cats like to be noticed. So they sleep at the center of the foyer, in the middle of the stairs and even on the couch, especially when there are guests.

Cats like to sharpen their claws. It is their nature, similar to wild cats such as lions, tigers, panthers, and cheetahs. This may irritate the owner, especially if the cat chooses to sharpen its claws on the couch. The owner may consider giving the cat a scratching post. The cat can be taught to scratch its claws on this post.

Cat Myths and Wives Tales

by: Elyse Grau
Alternately feared and revered, worshipped and reviled, the cat’s natural ability as a mouser ultimately won them a place in the lives and hearts of people.

Now we think of them less as pest control methods and more as members of our family.

But it wasn’t always so. Since the domestication of cats some 5000 years ago, they have been alternately welcomed into our homes and shunned as evil spirits.

It is interesting that the descriptions of the treatment of cats in Egyptian times sounds amazingly similar to our modern treatment, with the fortunate exception of punishment by death for anyone killing a cat.

The Egyptian goddess Bast was part woman, part cat. She represented the sacred eye of Horus, the God of Light. Regular feasts and holidays were celebrated in her honor.

The Romans adopted the cat more readily than other nations of the time. They were probably originally brought there from Egypt.

Roman armies traveled with their animals, including the cats. Some Roman towns were named for the cat.

In 936 the King of Wales enacted laws regarding the monetary value and desired traits of the cat. Expected qualities were to see, hear and kill mice; to have sharp claws and to be able to rear their kittens.

According to the law, if a person purchased a cat and it turned out to not posses one or more of these qualities, the buyer was entitled to a refund.

The cat’s mysterious character probably led to the many myths and superstitions surrounding it.

Cat’s eyes were believed to tell many things – from the time of day to the state of the tides.

Cats were also believed to be clairvoyant, and were used in charms and potions to bestow that talent on people.

Many body parts and substances from the cat were used for healing. The tail was particularly favored. In parts of England it is still used to cure sties.

Nautical superstitions involving cats are numerous. There are also quite a few nautical terms with “cat” in the word – a cat-boat is a small one masted boat; the narrow walk-way on a ship was called the catwalk, and whippings were often carried out using a cat-o-nine-tails.

Cats were believed to both foretell and affect the weather. Throwing a cat overboard was thought to bring about storms at sea.

In the 13th century, witchcraft trials began in Europe. Since cats were often named as a witch’s “familiar” (a spirit helpful to the witch), they acquired at this time an evil reputation.

Black cats were most strongly associated with witchcraft.

A book written in England in 1854 stated that a witch could only take on a feline form nine times. This is most likely the beginning of the myth that cats have nine lives.

Some modern day myths about cats still persist. For instance, while cats are extremely agile, it is not really true that they will always land on their feet.

It was once believed (and may still be) that cats could suck the breath from infants. The truth is that they just like the milky smell.

Though they may like it, milk really isn’t good for cats. A small amount probably won’t hurt, but too much can give both cats and dogs diarrhea.

Many people still believe that a black cat crossing their path brings bad luck.

Cats are inscrutable and mysterious; and can certainly look evil as easily as lovable. But all in all, they are wonderful companions and have been serving and entertaining us well for thousands of years.

SECRETS on Choosing Cat Urine Cleaning Products

Author: Hayden Brown
This is a true cat urine cleaning products Guide for those who ask any of the following questions:

How to choose a cat urine remover?

How to select a cat urine remover?

How to find a cat urine remover?

With all this choice in an endless supply of cat urine cleaning products there is one problem and that is "CHOICE". How do you choose the right one? how do you select the best product for you and your pet? Well I am going to share with you this secret whether your question is how to choose a cat urine remover, how to find a cat urine remover or how to select a cat urine remover.

The truth is you can spend days even weeks looking at different cat urine cleaning products and compare features or value. But somewhere you have to draw the line, some time you will have to make a choice. That is the reason for this article, to save pet owners from wasting their time and money on something that they really are not sure on. I have already spent my time looking at different cat urine cleaning products that remove serious cat urine and I'm giving you this information as an easy to understand rating system.

To understand the system completely you will first need to have the 9 MOST IMPORTANT CRITERIA you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY must know before purchasing any cat urine cleaning products. These following 9 criteria will allow you to make a quick sound judgment on any product, so you know instantly if it is a yes or a no! Without it you could be very disappointed with the product bought because of its lack of performance and with no way of refunding it, you would be wasting money.

So for the pet owners who want to find the best cat urine cleaning product to remove those serious cat urine stains just use these follow 9 criteras.

1. No fragrance to hide or disguise the odor since this will only fix the problem temporarily.

Masking the odor may work for the time being, but wait 2-3 hours and that smell will be back. It is important to be able to smell the urine stain with out fragrances to tell if it was effectively removed. If the smell persists then total removal was definitely ineffective even if no stain can be seen.

2. EASY to use SAVING you time, effort and MONEY!

Make sure the product is an easy one step process for its use! The last thing you need is to spend more time then necessary applying two or three treatments for total removal. I don't think the company really cares how long it takes you to clean up since they are not the ones cleaning up the mess. I want it to be as easy as possible! And so should YOU!

3. No claim to absorb or sponge the stain, since this will later require effort to clean any remaining remnants.

Any product that claims to absorb or sponge the stain usually (but not always) requires an applying step, then wait after X hours to do the second step, which is to vacuum or clean it up. To me this seems like double work and it would have to be cleaned thoroughly to remove all remnants of the cleaning agent.

4. Unmatched quality GUARANTEED by the manufacturer that will remove all components of the stain from color, texture, odor and the toughest component of ALL!.........Uric salt crystals!

A clearly stated GUARANTEE is important to you as the purchaser. This is your insurance and leverage as a customer. And it would not be smart to shop online without any form of insurance. Businesses today usually accept this form of risk to them and I would be suspicious of any business that did not CLEARLY state a GUARANTEE.

The toughest component of urine is the "Uric Salt Crystals". When looking for pet stain cleaner you should be looking to see what has it been tested on and what does it remove? Does it remove Uric Salt Crystals?

5. Must prevent your pet from repeated soiling in the same area.

The reason I was emphasizing about the Uric Salt Crystals is because it is these crystals that hold the marking scents of your pet. Remember how dog marks his territory by urinating around their area. Well it is these crystals that hold their scent in which they can find that same spot over and over again. If you can remover these Uric Salt Crystals then you can prevent this habit.

6. Must be NON-TOXIC for YOU, children, pets and guests.

I have a one and a half year old son at the time of writing this article and for anyone who is a parent, toxic chemicals are a concern. We place all ours outside in the shed and up high so they are out of the reach of little hands. But if you are not a parent then you too should give a thought about the toxics used in your house. This is for you, your pets and for the people you invite to come around to your house.

7. Must have a long history (i.e. 30 YEARS) of customer satisfaction.

If the business or product has been around for a long period time then you can feel assured that the product may be good. The logic behind this statement is that with all the securities commissions around the world and the strong internet anti-fraud measures, a business will have to be legitimate to stay around for any long period of time. If they were not legitimate then they would only be around for a short time before getting shut down. Scams come and go but a good business or product is around for the long term, that you can TRUST!

8. Size.

How much are you getting in one bottle? You want the bottle to last a while before you have to order a new one.

9. Unbeatable value, including FREE bonuses, with out any drop in quality.

What I am about to say may be common knowledge to some people, but the problem with 'common knowledge' is that it is not common. Once you have found your pet stain cleaner that seems to be a high quality product. You MUST ask "WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME!" If you purchase this product, what else are you going to get? By doing this you will always get more value for your dollar.

There is a skill to this as well, since you need to look for the not so obvious. Most people look for the little free gimmicks like a free carpet cleaner included or a free black light to find stains (you will need the right UV frequency for it to work). But what I am talking about are extras that work for you. Are you receiving bonuses that you can sell? Might you get the opportunity to join the businesses affiliate program after the purchase and make money off the product you tested (used). Is that business going to work for you long term?, long after the purchase of their product. An example of this is found at http://www.bestcaturinecleaner.com/go/urinecleaning/famecare

So if you are thinking of purchasing a Cat Urine Cleaning product remember to keep these 9 criteria in mind as you will reach the best solution faster. They are valid points in which pet owners must consider and for anyone spending money it is important to ask if that money will return.

Pictures Of Cat's Body Language Can Tell You A Lot

By: Ryan Oreilly
Pictures of cats' body language can tell you a lot about what your cat is thinking. But ask yourself this question first – is there something going on that would make your cat act the way it is? Did something change in your cat's home environment? A new addition to the household (human or animal)? Did you play too roughly with your cat? Pictures of cats' ears and tails will give you some of the information you need to get a handle on cat language. However, first hand experience is usually a whole lot better. That is unless you happen to have a cat with its ears pinned back and a nice set of teeth showing.

Pictures of cats can tell you a lot about their general state of mind, but they don't let you know what you are supposed to do when you are faced with an unhappy camper. In a nutshell if you have a cat that takes exception to living in general, it's usually a good idea to have him Vet checked for any possible medical problems first. As cats age, some get grumpy and grumpy can translate into aggression at times. Watch their diet as well. A cat that is not getting the proper nutrition can get bent out of shape in no time flat because they aren't feeling well. There is evidence that tuna, yeast and hormone-injected meats have been known to cause some cats to get upset.

Pictures of cats staring down other cats or a dog will tell you the cat is about to let fly by looking at the ears and the whiskers. The ears will be pinned tight to their head and their whiskers close to their noses. They haul in their whiskers so they can show off their lovely razor sharp teeth. No doubt you've seen pictures of cats with their heads lowered, staring down their noses, with whiskers plastered to their faces. You clearly know what is about to happen.

Ahhh but what to do when your cat attacks you? There are several things that come to mind and you might want to try some of these. Whether or not some of these things work will totally depend on the personality of your cat. Since you know your cat, pick and choose what you think would be worth trying.

The first thing to try is to simply walk away. Don't give the cat any more attention. The second thing you can try is to pick the cat up and point it in another direction. If this works, you've got a handle on the situation. If not, then put the cat in the bathroom for about five minutes. You're trying to train your cat that aggression is NOT good. You can also try distraction with a lure toy. In the final analysis, handle your cat with respect and care, don't roughhouse too much with them, keep them in a low stress environment and remember that some factors (pre-existing ones you had no control over) may have also contributed to their cranky disposition.

Enough on cranky dispositions! What about pictures of cats with a happy attitude? Here's what you would be looking for in a happy cat. Look for tail tall and straight and ears forward a touch and high – perked up if you will. Some pictures of cats that are in a grand mood will show the tip of the tail just slightly bent over his back. If the tail is horizontal your cat is having a so-so average day. Drooping tails usually indicate unhappiness or poor health. See your Vet. If you've ever seen pictures of cats with a tail all puffed out and looking like a bottle-brush, it means your cat is about ready to attack or is very frightened. A rapidly thrashing tail means "Bug off, you're bothering me!" A slowly wagging tail means your cat in on the alert. If your cat is anxious about something or fearful, you may see lip licking and in some cases purring. Talk about mixed signals!

Cat body language is an art of sorts, but once owned by a feline, you pick up the lingo really quickly, not to mention the fun of trying to figure out what they heck they're trying to tell you.

Farm Life with Roosters and a Guard Cat!

By Charlene Hamm
Tiger came to us as a wild little kitten, catching my son’s heart. He worked with her over several months until she was tame and very lovable. Who knew this little ball of fur would become a most revered guard animal.

How this came to be we are not sure. One day two of the New Hampshire Red roosters started following Tiger around. After that, they never left her sight. In order to feed Tiger, we had to put her and her food between the door and screen door. Otherwise, the roosters would eat the cat food faster than she could.

Shortly thereafter, Tiger sent the neighboring farm dogs running home with their tails between their legs. That is when the entire chicken coop became her domain. She would enter the chicken coop each morning when I feed. The hens would circle around her and she would observe every one of them, even the chicks, as if she was the Queen of the Coop! Never once did I see her hiss or harm any of the birds.

It became a daily event to see my mom walking to the mailbox with Tiger and two roosters in tow. Now, we did have a miniature donkey for protection but he just did not seem to be the threat that Tiger was. Even though the turkeys were much larger than she was and they tended to stay with Pepper, our donkey, Tiger would come to their aid also.

Tiger tolerated our dog. They seemed to have a mutual respect for one another and kept their distance from each other. Of course, our dog could care less about the roosters or other animals. I am sure in his mind he was King of the Farm and those other animals just were not allowed to venture into his areas.

I have always had roosters with my hens for protection. But when I started loosing hens to predators, I knew I needed help. I felt Pepper, our miniature donkey, would be the answer. While he got along with most of the animals, he tended to let them loose instead of watching over them. I guess he felt freedom was more important than safety.

Tiger served as our guard animal for four years and the day she died was a sad day for our entire family. We have never had another cat like her nor do we think we ever will. Some animals just know their place within a family and she will always be remembered as a special part of ours.
