Kitty Cats Our Life Long Friends

By : Paulina Jenkins
Cats have been our beloved pets for millenniums. Looking at ancient pictures, there is almost always a cat in the picture. Owning a cat is different from any other pet, cats almost instantaneously bond with the person or family they live with. That bond is so strong, that should something happen to someone in the family, the cat will show grief and mourn the loss.

When and if we do decide to have a cat as our pet, there are certain basic rules to bear in mind. A cat will need to be fed proper food that consists of protein and essential vitamins. Be very careful with milk because it could cause diarrhea. A litter box and scratching post are a must. Other basic supplies include water bowl, food bowl, toys, kitty condo, brushes and comb.

In the past, kitty toys have been pretty generic. A toy mouse on a string and your cat would play for hours. Today however, kitty toys are very sophisticated. There are interactive kitty toys that will make your children jealous and want to play with them. However it seems like the old fashioned, toy ball filled with catnip is just as likely to make you kitty jump for joy as the expensive toys on the market today. It is important to note that any toy that has an exposed elastic band is not safe for any cat or kitten and should be avoided.

Purchasing a scratching post would be in the best interest of both you and your kitty. This is because cats need to sharpen their claws often, and if you do not want your furniture to be shredded, a scratching post is a necessity. Trimming your cats claws is also a necessity, however if you are not comfortable about doing it, you should take your cat to the vet, he or she will be more than happy to do it.

There are a great variety of cat brushes, combs and rakes that you can purchase from all pet supply stores. During a grooming session you can use a combination of different brushes, combs and rakes. Frequent brushing helps to maintain the coats healthy, reduces shedding and hairballs. Brushes also help to get rid of dead, dry skin, excess hair and spread even any natural oils over the coat of the kitty cats.

When grooming kitty cats with thick and long hairs such as the Persians, brushing has to be carried out on a daily basis. Otherwise, the coat will get into knots and tangle and you have to send your pet to be professionally groomed. Brushing also can pick up any flea or tick on the hairs. Grooming session is good for bonding with your kitty cat.

For cats with short hairs, if the coat is the thick type, hard brushes are the ideal ones to use. On those cats with short and sleek coats, the soft brushes are more suitable. You can use the slicker brushes on both the longhaired and shorthaired cats. Wire or pin brushes are best used on kitty cats with long hairs to prevent matting and tangle. Hard bristled brushes are mostly used on shorthaired cats.

We may live in a modern society but we still need our beloved kitty cats. They are capable of bring so much joy and love into our lives. Studies have found that they have a most comforting and calming effect on the elderly and sick. I always believe that God in His infinite wisdom has given us this wonderful creature to be our life long companions.
